What if a magical 2D fox teleported into your washing machine?

LING (SHORT FILM / COMIC BOOK / T-SHIRTS!)

Written by Marie Iida & Dennis Liu, Illustrated by Mariko Yamashin

PREMISE: AN ASIAN-AMERICAN SUPERHERO!! She’s not sexy, she’s not good at math, she’s not submissive, and she skateboards. LING, a Chinese American teen with a birthmark on her face, struggles with cyberbullying and self-image in high school. One day, Kitsy, a magical three legged fox, teleports into her washing machine to tell her that she’s a "which”: she has the ability to transform to be, whichever girl she wants to be.

(Imagine a Teen ALIAS meets BUFFY, with a “S-witchery” twist. Picture SPACE JAM and WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT but with anime! Not to mention a magical fox who teleported into her washing machine!)

Ling is the second diverse superhero I will release and create. Four talented Asian American women joined me in making this comic and cinematic short over the last couple years - writer Marie Iida, illustrator Mariko Yamashin, line producer Teresa Lee, and of course Angeline Jara, who plays Ling.

Ling is a fun and edgy comic for teens; she’s a kick ass Asian American character we wish we had growing up. Ok fine, so you’re a grown adult like us. You can be a fan of hers too. The goal of Ling was to create the coolest, character driven, Asian American superheroine we could come up with. She is not a sidekick, submissive or stereotypical (C’mon Deadpool!!).

Ling’s not a model minority and she’s not oversexualized. Ling is not a “Mary Su.” In fact, Ling constantly is getting her ass kicked. Yet she gets up. Day after day. And she fights. (With a transformable laser canon turned hover skateboard broomstick - aka the kaboomstick). Since so much of Asian American history and experience is assimilation, for better or for worse, Ling’s abilities are that she is a “which girl” - she can change her identity. Pilot? Banker? Football star? Femme Fatale? Ling can be, whichever girl she wants to be!

Thank you for Randall Park for donating your time and your support. Like the indie version of Raising Dion, we will try to continue this project so long as you, the audience supports it. Funds that we receive from the book go right into the series.
